7 Steps to Selling Digital Products
Hi, I’m Daniel, and in this post, I’ll show you how to create a profitable digital product business in just three months.
By following these steps, you can establish a repeatable growth and monetization strategy that requires just an hour a day.
This is the exact method I used to grow my Instagram page to 80,000 followers and monetize an email list of 8,000 subscribers from scratch.
1. Decide on a Niche
The first step is to identify the niche you want to focus on. Your niche should be a combination of your skills, interests, and market needs. Here’s how to find your perfect niche:
- Identify Your Skills and Interests: Think about what you enjoy and what you’re good at.
- Research Market Needs: Look for niches where there is demand and less competition.
- Combine Interests: If you have multiple interests, combine them if they are complementary (e.g., productivity and Notion templates).
You can’t sell a product if no one knows about it. Growing your audience on social media is crucial for visibility and engagement. Here’s how to get started:
- Instagram: Create engaging posts, reels and stories. Use ManyChat for automated messaging.
- Twitter: Share valuable insights and engage with your audience.
- LinkedIn: Publish articles and participate in relevant groups.
- TikTok: Create short, engaging videos to attract followers.
- Blog: Write detailed blog posts that provide value to your readers.
The trick for social media is to look at content that has recently gone viral in your niche and then to recreate your own version of the content.
3. Create a Free Product as a Lead Magnet
A lead magnet is a free resource offered to your audience in exchange for their email addresses. This helps grow your email list and builds trust with your audience. Here’s how to create an effective lead magnet:
- Identify Audience Needs: Understand what your audience finds valuable.
- Create a Valuable Freebie: Offer guides, checklists, or templates.
- Promote Your Lead Magnet: Share it on social media, your blog, and through email campaigns.
4. Promote the Free Product to Grow Your Email List
Promoting your free product helps you grow your email list, which is essential for future marketing efforts. Here’s how to do it:
- Use Social Media: Share links to your lead magnet in Tweets, posts and stories.
- Use ManyChat: On Instagram, set up automated messages to send links when users comment specific keywords.
- Create Landing Pages: Direct traffic to a dedicated landing page for your lead magnet where the person must enter their email to join your email list.
You can host the free product on Gumroad, Podia, or Lemonsqueezy. Alternatively, it can just be a pdf that they get in an email.
5. Create and Sell a Digital Product
Once you have an engaged email list, it’s time to create a paid digital product. Here’s how to get started:
- Develop the Product: Create a product that solves a problem in your niche (e.g., online courses, digital planners, or templates).
- Create a Landing Page: Use platforms like Gumroad or Podia to host your product and landing page.
- Market to Your Email List: Send a series of promotional emails to your subscribers.
- Market to Your Audiences: Promote your product to the social audiences that you have built up.
6. Grow Using Paid Traffic
Paid advertising can help scale your business by reaching a wider audience. Here’s how to effectively use paid traffic:
- Facebook Ads: Create targeted ad campaigns to reach your ideal audience.
- Instagram Ads: Promote posts and stories to attract more followers.
- Google Ads: Use search and display ads to drive traffic to your landing pages.
Tip: use Sparkloop Upscribe to help breakeven on your ads. This is where you get paid a commission for referring traffic to other
7. Automate Your Processes
Automation saves time and ensures your business runs smoothly. Here’s how to automate effectively:
- Email Sequences: Set up automated welcome sequences for new subscribers.
- Content: Create templates to speed up content creation.
- Virtual Assistants: Hire VA’s to do the bulk of the content creation for you.
- Automations: Setup automations such as reengagement campaigns to deal with unengaged subscribers.
By following these steps, you can build a successful digital product business that grows and monetizes efficiently.
